Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States, and you must show proof of citizenship.

Experience: You need one or more full years of professional nursing experience at the GS-11 level. This includes screening or lab tests, patient care or wellness teaching, coordinating care plans, and reviewing care processes to find ways to improve; paid and unpaid experience both count. Experience alone must meet this requirement.

Education: You need a graduate or higher degree from an accredited professional nursing program, with accreditation from a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the CGFNS Certification Program. Education cannot replace experience for this job.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, unrestricted nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory, and passed the NCLEX exam
  • Current, active, unrestricted Advanced Practice Nurse license or registration as a Nurse Practitioner or related specialty
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross; advanced certifications like ALS do not replace it

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: After the announcement closes, your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire answers are reviewed to check whether you meet the qualification requirements. If you are found to have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and missing or incomplete documents can make your application ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach a copy of your nursing license and your BLS certification with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list the hours per week for each job, or your application may be removed or marked incomplete.
  • Attach your official transcripts, since your nursing degree must be verified and you cannot use education to replace experience.
