Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply, and you must prove citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.

Experience: You need one or more full years of professional nursing experience that included taking patient health histories, prescribing medicines, and ordering or reading lab or diagnostic test results. The announcement says this experience matches the next lower level, GS-11.

Education: You need a graduate or higher degree from an accredited Family Nurse Practitioner program, and you must attach transcripts. Degrees from foreign nursing schools need official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, unrestricted nurse license in Family Nurse Practitioner or a related specialty from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is rated on your online questionnaire, resume, and supporting documents to see if you meet the qualifications. Incomplete packages are not considered, and inflated qualifications can cause you to lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach transcripts, because your degree must be from an accredited program and you must show it.
  • Attach a copy of your nursing license, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages and list hours per week for each job; submit by 11:59 PM EST on 11/06/2026.
