Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Current federal employees of the VA may also apply under the internal part of the posting.

Experience: Nurse II is the entry level and requires no experience. To qualify at Nurse III, you need one year of specialized nurse practitioner experience equal to the Nurse II level. Hematology/Oncology experience is preferred but not required.

Education: A post-master's certificate, or a master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you finished. Foreign degrees must be validated by an agency-recognized evaluator. Applicants still finishing their degree may be selected but cannot be hired until it is complete.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active, current, full and unrestricted Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) license in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • Full and current basic board certification as a Nurse Practitioner in an approved specialty such as FNP, ANP, AGPCNP, ACNP, AGACNP or GNP, from ANCC, AANPCB, or another nationally recognized body
  • Valid state driver's license

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 33 days (December 2, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your application meets the listed qualifications. The VA verifies your experience, so describe your work clearly and specifically, because the VA will not assume anything. Errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Use the VA's standard one-page clinical resume in the two-page Resume field, and put your full resume in the Other field.
  • If you use your education to qualify, upload your transcript, since the announcement says it is required for that.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 or SF-15 if you qualify, because proof is required.
