Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to U.S. citizens. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited under VA policy.

Experience: No experience is required for Nurse II, the entry level. Nurse III requires one year of specialized nurse practitioner experience equal to Nurse II. One year of primary care or employee occupational health experience is preferred.

Education: A post-master's certificate, or a master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner, from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you finished the program. Foreign degrees must be validated by an agency-recognized evaluator. If your education is not finished, you may be referred but cannot be hired until it is complete.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active, current, full, and unrestricted Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) license in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • Current basic board certification in an NP specialty (such as Family or Adult NP) from ANCC, AANPCB, or another recognized certifying body

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your questionnaire, resume, and supporting documents, which will be verified. Errors or missing information may lower your rating or affect your consideration. Reference checks may be done, and veterans may get preference when qualifications are about equal.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Use a long-form resume or CV that shows your dates of nursing experience and your hours per week, since your experience will be verified.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, send your DD-214 and SF-15 with proof, because documentation is required to award preference.
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts only from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency.
