Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens can apply. You must also be found suitable for federal employment.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-04 (GS-11/12) level, in federal or private or public sector work. Specialized experience means working as a professional contract specialist who handles awards, cost analysis, negotiations, solicitations and close-outs for construction, architecture, or engineering projects.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university can qualify you. This requirement applies to people entering DoD GS-1102 positions on or after October 1, 2000, but some current DoD civilians and military members are exempt.

Licenses and certifications:

  • DAWIA certification in the assigned functional area and tier, plus Continuous Learning points

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: HR reviews your resume against the listed qualifications and rates you on what it shows, along with your supporting documents. If you overstate your qualifications or experience, you may be found ineligible, and missing or unclear information can lower your rating or remove you from consideration. Qualified applicants go to the hiring manager, who may hold interviews.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show dates (month/year), hours per week, and pay plan, series and grade for each federal job.
  • If you use a bachelor's degree to qualify, include transcripts or a degree copy.
  • Keep your resume to 2 pages or less and make sure it is easy to read.
