Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but the agency clarifies that only U.S. citizens may apply. You must be a U.S. citizen to be considered.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience comparable to NT-03 (GS-09/10) in federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a Security Specialist. Your resume must also show expert knowledge of security equipment and systems, and of security programs such as PHYSEC, ATFP, INFOSEC, OPSEC, and SETA.

Education: Education can replace experience in these ways: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; 3 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to such a degree; an LL.M., if related; or a mix of experience and graduate education that equals one year of experience. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting institution.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current SFPC (Security Fundamentals Professional Certification)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 359 days (October 28, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Human Resources will review your resume against the listed qualifications as vacancies occur, and qualified applicants go to the hiring manager, who may interview them. If HR finds you inflated your qualifications, you may be found not qualified, and an incomplete package can lead to an ineligible rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Sensitive Compartmented Information), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show employer, start and end dates by month and year, hours per week, and pay plan, series, and grade for federal jobs.
  • If you use education to qualify, include an accredited school transcript that shows the required coursework.
  • Email your complete package to Security_Specialist_Resume_Review@us.navy.mil, because facsimile applications will not be considered.
