Who can apply: Federal employees - Competitive service, Federal employees - Excepted service, The public, National Guard and reserves.
Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S., including current federal employees and National Guard or reserve members. You must be a National Guard member or be eligible for immediate membership in the Alabama Army National Guard, in a military grade from private (PVT) to sergeant first class (SFC).
Experience: You need 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-7) before you can be considered for GS-8. This should show basic accounting principles, total accounting procedures, and planning and coordinating work to solve problems. General experience in reconciling accounts, verifying documents, and preparing reports also counts.
Education: Military technical training or accredited civilian academic courses may substitute for some specialized experience. Schools must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 25 days (November 22, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on the online Occupational Questionnaire and your resume and supporting documents. If you rate yourself higher than your documents support, your score may be lowered or you may be removed from consideration; you must also describe your experience in your own words, not copy the announcement.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Write your experience in your own words, because copying the announcement may lead to disqualification.
- Show month and year dates and hours per week for each job on your resume.
- If you are unsure you can join the National Guard, call an Alabama Army National Guard recruiter at 800-464-8273 before applying.
