Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: Your paid or unpaid nursing experience sets your nurse grade level, which is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice. For example, Nurse I Level III requires an associate degree plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year at the Nurse I Level II level.

With education: You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the rules for foreign nursing schools. Your degree level also affects your grade: an associate degree or diploma, a BSN, or a master's or doctoral degree in nursing or a related field.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Transcripts from accredited schools if you rely on education
  • Professional certification or nursing license copy, if applicable
  • DD-214 showing service dates and character of service, if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15 with proof, if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
  • Cover letter and other listed documents, only if they apply to you

How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your online questionnaire and application package. Your resume, CV, and supporting documents will be verified. Errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Tips for this job:

  • Be clear and specific about your nursing experience, because the agency says it will not make assumptions.
  • The 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job, so a full long-form resume or CV is fine.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, send your DD-214 and SF-15 and claim the preference in the questionnaire.
