Mission Support Specialist
Immigration and Customs Enforcement · Department of Homeland Security
This job in plain English
This is a full-time, permanent Mission Support Specialist job with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), part of the Department of Homeland Security. The job is in Washington, DC, Irving, Texas, or Arlington, Virginia, and only a few positions are open. It is filled through direct hire, and occasional travel may be required.
It may close early. The first 150 applicants receive first consideration, and others may be considered only if management asks, so applying early is important.
Can you apply?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.
- Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.
- Displaced federal employeesFederal employees who lost or are losing their job through a reduction in force (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).
Other groups listed above may get extra consideration, for example veterans' preference.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The agency uses Direct Hire Authority, so veterans' preference does not apply, although veterans are encouraged to include their information.

For GS-09, you need one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, showing at least three listed duties such as resolving discrepancies, ensuring compliance, or verifying facts from several sources.
With education: For GS-07, one full academic year of graduate-level education in a field that shows the needed knowledge and skills. How to apply well
What to send:
- 2-page resume showing job title, duties, employer name, phone, address, start and end dates (MM/YY), hours per week, and whether we may contact your current supervisor
- Unofficial college transcript or a list of courses with hours, if you qualify through education
- DD-214 or other discharge paper, if you claim veterans' status
- SF-15 and proof of eligibility, if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
- Agency notice, most recent performance rating, and SF-50, if you claim ICTAP priority
- Most recent SF-50, if you are a current or former federal employee
- SF-50 and a statement of your political appointment details, if you are a current or former political appointee
How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the minimum qualifications, using your resume, supporting documents, questionnaire answers, and a USA Hire online assessment. The assessment checks competencies such as attention to detail, customer service, decision making, and teamwork. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment can get you removed from consideration.
Tips for this job:
- Give dates in MM/YY format and list hours worked per week for each job on your resume, or it may be incomplete.
- Describe your own work clearly and do not copy the duties or questionnaire text into your resume.
- Only the first 2 pages of your resume are reviewed, so put your most relevant experience first.
- If you qualify through education, attach an unofficial transcript or a course list with hours.
