Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: Your experience must match the grade you apply for. For example, Nurse I, Level III requires 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2; step-down or ICU experience is preferred.

With education: A bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) or a master's degree (MSN) can qualify you in place of some experience, depending on the grade. You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, and foreign degrees above associate level need a formal equivalency validation.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration (RN license) in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or CV showing your nursing experience clearly
  • Transcript if you qualify through education
  • Cover letter, if applicable
  • DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
  • SF-50 dated within the past year if you are a current VA employee
  • Professional certification or license copy, if applicable
  • Certificate of Foreign Equivalency if you use foreign education

How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your questionnaire and documents. Your nursing experience is judged on five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research, and missing information can lower your rating.

Tips for this job:

  • Include a transcript with your application if you use education to qualify.
  • Describe your ICU, critical care, or step-down work clearly, with dates and hours, because experience is not assumed.
  • If you want EDRP, plan to submit its application within four months of appointment.
