Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: Your pay grade and level depend on your education, scope, and length of nursing practice. For example, Nurse I Level III requires 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year at Nurse I Level II, and experience is rated on five dimensions: practice, Veteran and patient driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research.

With education: You must graduate from a professional nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the foreign school rules in the announcement. An associate degree or diploma can qualify you at the entry levels, while a BSN, master's, or doctoral degree can qualify you at higher levels. Foreign nursing degrees are not counted as related degrees for the master's-plus-related-field options.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or DC

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or CV (the 2-page resume limit does not apply)
  • Cover letter
  • Copy of your nursing license
  • Professional certification, if you have one
  • Transcripts, if you use education to qualify
  • DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
  • Disability letter (Schedule A or VA), if applicable

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications through the online questionnaire, and your resume, CV, and documents will be verified. Missing information, errors, or unclear experience may lower your rating or make you ineligible, and VA performs pre-employment reference checks.

Tips for this job:

  • Use a long-form resume or CV that shows dates, hours per week, and specific nursing duties, since VA will not assume your experience.
  • Send transcripts only from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting body if you rely on education.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 or SF-15 if you qualify.
