Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: To be referred, you need at least one year of full-time RN experience. Your grade depends on your education and experience, such as 2 years of professional nursing experience for Nurse I, Level III. Experience is judged on the quality of your nursing practice, not just the years.

With education: You must be a graduate of a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the foreign school rules in the announcement. A BSN, MSN or doctoral degree can count toward a higher grade in place of some experience. Foreign degrees above associate level need a formal equivalency validation.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active and unrestricted registered nurse (RN) license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico or D.C.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: a 120-day temporary appointment is possible while you work toward a license, if you meet the other education requirements.

How to apply well

What to send:

  • License (required)
  • Long-form resume or curriculum vitae (CV) (required)
  • Cover letter, if you choose to send one
  • DD-214 showing dates and character of service, if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15 with proof, if you claim 10-point preference
  • Transcript, if you use education to qualify
  • Foreign Education Equivalency Certificate, if you use a foreign degree
  • Professional certification, if you have one

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Your RN experience is judged on five areas: practice, Veteran and patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice and research. Missing required information or errors can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Tips for this job:

  • Clearly list your RN license number, state and status, since the license is a required document.
  • Describe your RN experience with specific dates, hours and duties, because the agency will not assume anything.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and, if needed, an SF-15 with proof, and claim the preference in the questionnaire.
