Cook
Air Education and Training Command · Department of the Air Force
This job in plain English
This is a permanent cook job at the Altus Youth Center on Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, run by Air Education and Training Command. It is a Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) job, meaning the base's own morale and recreation funds pay for it rather than general tax dollars. The schedule is intermittent, with zero hours guaranteed and up to 40 hours a week possible.
Can you apply?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.
- Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.
Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. Applicants are sorted by preference eligibility, such as military spouse, veteran, or transition hiring preference, and you must provide proof of any eligibility you claim.
What you would do
- Roast, bake, fry, boil, steam and stew meats, fish and poultry.
- Make soups, sauces, gravies and puddings from scratch, without packaged mixes.
- Adjust standard recipes for the number of servings.
- Plan cooking so several dishes finish on time at the right temperature.
- Prepare cold platters, salads and hors d'oeuvres.
Do you qualify for NA-6?
With experience: You need experience and knowledge of food preparation, planning meals so they are all ready on time, yield testing, and ordering, issuing and storing food. This experience must come from a grill, snack bar, restaurant, club or similar food activity. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, can count.
With education: Education cannot replace experience for this job. Education from a foreign school can count, but you must show proof that it is equal to a U.S. education.
How to apply well
What to send:
- Resume showing your food service experience, dates and hours per week
- Proof of any preference or eligibility you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans
- Proof that foreign education is equal to U.S. education, if you use it
- Cover letter, optional
How you will be rated: After the closing date, your resume, questionnaire answers and documents are reviewed to see if you meet the minimum qualifications. Minimally qualified applicants are then compared on their level of experience. If the agency finds you overstated your answers, you may be removed from consideration.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your food service work clearly on your resume, with dates and hours per week, since that is how your experience is judged.
- Attach proof for any preference you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans, or your application will be incomplete.
- Education cannot replace experience here, so focus your resume on hands-on cooking work in a grill, snack bar, restaurant or club.
