With experience: The job has a minimum of 2 years of triage experience as a condition of employment. Experience needed also depends on your grade: for example, Nurse I, Level II requires 1 year of specialized nursing experience at the Nurse I, Level I level if you have an associate degree (ADN), while Nurse I, Level III requires 2 years of professional nursing experience with an ADN.

With education: You must have graduated from a school of professional nursing accredited by ACEN or CCNE. An associate degree or diploma in nursing qualifies you for Nurse I, Level I. A bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) can qualify you for higher levels, and master's and doctoral degrees are also listed for Nurse II and Nurse III.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician exception: a 120-day temporary appointment while you pursue licensure, if you otherwise meet education requirements

How to apply well

What to send:

  • SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference, with proof

How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications through an online questionnaire. Your nursing experience is checked for quality across five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

Tips for this job:

  • Claim veterans' preference in the online questionnaire and send your DD-214 if you qualify.
  • Show your triage experience clearly in your resume, with dates and hours per week.
  • Send your full application package, including all required documents, by the closing date, because missing items can lower your rating.
